[ 10:48AM ] [ monkey ] [ Woman's vote film by HBO ]

             Comments by Prof B Jackson:

Class,
This will probably be the first time many of you can vote in a presidential election. There are registration forms across from my office in a plexiglass container on the wall next to the bulletin board. Tech is an institution of higher learning dedicated to teaching you to think and to be leaders in your community. If our brightest citizens don't vote, who will make our decisions? The article below shows how much some people endured to get that right. DrJ

The Value of a Vote - A short history lesson on the privilege of voting...

The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night,
they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their
warden's blessing went on a rampage against the
33 women wrongly convicted of "obstructing sidewalk traffic."They beat
Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left
her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled
Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and
knocked her out cold. Her cell mate,
Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack.
Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating,
choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the "Night of Terror" on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden
at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a
lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to
picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food
-- all of it colorless slop -- was infested with worms. When one of
the leaders,
Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair,
forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she
vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled
out to the press.

Some men and women won't vote this year because -- why,
exactly? We have to get to work? Our vote
doesn't matter? Last week, I went to a sparsely
attended screening of HBO's new movie "Iron Jawed Angels". It is a
graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull
the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I
needed the reminder.

HBO will run the movie periodically before releasing it on video and
DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would
include the movie in their curriculum.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade
a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be
permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the
doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That
didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: "Courage in
women is often mistaken for insanity."

Don't give away control of your life - register and vote!

[ 8:15PM ] [ monkey ] [ DC Indipendent Film Festival ]

The Legend of Crazy George has applied to:

The 2005 Washington DC Independent Film Festival
March 3 - 13, 2005, Washington, DC.

Mission:
The mission of the DCIFF is to provide a yearly event where industry professionals and the general public come to see the latest, most exciting films (features, shorts, animation and documentary) from the United States and abroad. For seven days in March, DCIFF provides an opportunity for independent filmmakers to showcase their work at DC, most exciting festival, attend informative seminars, access a unique film market, participate in a trade show which also provides an exclusive opportunity for leading production companies to showcase their production services and latest technological advances in our nation's capital; and network in the country, third most important production communities.
History: Festival, Market and Seminars
The DC Independent Film Festival (DCIFF):
In March 2000, seeing that there was little to no support or opportunities in Washington, DC for independent filmmakers to showcase their films to the general audience, the 1st official film DC Independent Film Festival (DCIFF) was launched, with over 30 films (features, shorts, documentaries and animation) from around the DC metro area over 3 days. Originally coined "DCDANCE ", the 2000 festival was held at the Loew Cineplex Foundry Theatre in Georgetown and presented such notable films as the DC premiere of Barry Levinson' documentary Original Diner Guys . The event was successful galvanized the region's filmmakers. The 2nd Annual DCIFF 2001 expanded to 5 days, from March 7th-11th and was held at Visions Cinema & Bistro, playing to sold out audiences. Stepping up to a larger venue, participation, sponsorship, and support more than quadrupled. The DC Independent Film Festival now had the command of attention with local media celebrities such as Arch Campbell to Fox 5 News, WUSA, and WTOP radio covering the event. The closing night film in 2001 presented Dan Cohen' Diamond Men which went on to be declared by the Washington Post "One of the best films of the year " and Roger Ebert later included the film in his "Overlooked Film Festival" . Clearly hitting its mark, with top-notch films pouring in and ever growing support, DCIFF 2002 again expanded, this time to seven days showcasing over 130 films, prompting Stephen Hunter of the Washington Post to declare the events "insanely ambitious" and a "must see". Audiences and critics alike enjoyed world premieres of the most innovative films, award winning films fresh from renown festivals such as Sundance and Cannes, as well as the films: Copy Shop and The Accountant ; one went on to be nominated and other won an Oscar at the 2002 Academy Awards.

[ 12:42PM ] [ monkey ] [ Sundance ]

We have applied to be in the Sundance Film Festival. This is the beginning of a long list of film festivals that Crazy George will be busting into.

The 2005 Sundance Film Festival will be held on January 20 - 30 in Park City, Utah.
In 1978, the Utah/US Film Festival, an annual cinematic exhibition, was created in Salt Lake City. During its early years, the Film Festival focused primarily on the presentation of retrospective films and filmmaker seminars. However, from its inception, the Film Festival featured a national competition aimed at drawing attention to emerging American films made outside the Hollywood system-independent cinema. The United States Film Festival moved to Park City, Utah in 1981 and included documentaries and short films along with its program of dramatic features.
In 1985, responding to the need for support from an organization that could provide year-round programming, administrative staffing, financial backing, and a network of contacts, the Film Festival became part of the Sundance Institute and added international films to its program. Officially renamed in 1991, the Sundance Film Festival is now recognized internationally as a showcase for the best in new American independent film.

MIDNIGHT SCREENINGS: A series of films that play well at midnight. These are often edgy, sometimes shocking, most always fun. A good place to find the new cult classic.

[ 10:03AM ] [ monkey ] [ Haunted House final word ]

Paul Sharp has informed me that the fire inspector has shut down the old Fright Factory as a fire hazard. The sprinkler system no longer works and would require a $2,000 repair. This years haunted house will be at the fair grounds. So it seem there will be some killing after all.

Kong is harder to find than Bubbles

Jack Black is in Wellington, New Zealand, filming
King Kong. He's often to be found late at night
drinking in Fidel's bar on Cuba Street. When a
local asked him about the movie one night,
Jack's only reply; "NO-ONE has seen the monkey."

[ 5:14PM ] [ mccaleb ] [ Interesting... ]

Some interesting goings on in the basement of an industrial building in the middle of Cookeville. Strange noises, hairs standing up on the back of your neck? doesn't suprise me!

Interesting side not to the Freak Factory of which thanks to Bernie Davidson and a few others the sprinkler system is back up and will be charged and certified Saturday so there is hope once again.

Last week going thru the Factory I heard a dog growl, all the hair stood up on my neck and head and weird stuff began to happen ( I was by myself ) I exited quickly and now want a big flashlight and someone else with me when I go down there.

Tonight Bernie Davidson and his friend Hershel were down there working when behold the ghost (s) appeared to them, they tried to get out but got lost, finally they exited the building and are vowing to get a bigger flashlight and garlic or whatever else they can get to repel the ghost.

Alas the ghost are back and it seems the rumors of the Wilson building being haunted are true, but the Freak Factory may still be alive, will let everyone know Saturday after the Sprinkler company leaves. But if you visit be forewarned the ghost are back.
